AI
TenWise conducts the design, data handling, development and deployment of AI tools according to the FASTEPS principles. For EU projects we add the legal and ethical requirements as described in: EU AI Act: https://artificialintelligenceact.eu/
Examples of dedicated projects we work on are:
JRC- NAMS (BimmoH)
Within the project JRC/IPR/2023/OP/1399we develop an EU public Artificial Intelligence driven database of human biology based Non-Animal Methods for biomedical research (BimmoH).
TenWise develops a scalable framework for identifying and categorizing scientific papers that describe New Approach Methods (NAMs) in the MEDLINE database. By using machine learning models and domain-specific expertise, the project facilitates the dissemination of research that emphasizes human-based biomedical methods and reducing reliance on traditional animal models.

3Ranker – Using artificial intelligence for 3R research
Partnering with Karolinska and University of Utrecht on an algorithm that assist researchers in finding experiments that are able to replace, refine or reduce the use of animal models.
Funded by the Swedish Fund for Research Without Animal Experiments, the 3Ranker portal was launched for public use in the beginning of 2023.
The project has developed an artificial intelligence-based search algorithm for 3R-relevant papers, and it currently works for 35 million abstracts that are indexed in Medline. The project has so far focused on Replacement, but plans to include Refinement and Reduction in the future. The 3Ranker portal is setup as a collaborative platform and users interested in contributing as certified reviewers can apply for a review access free of charge.
In addition to the search function, the 3Ranker portal also contains curated abstracts, abstracts that have been evaluated by experts. These abstracts have been considered to have a clear connection to the 3Rs principle and cover so far, the research fields neuroscience and skin.
The 3Ranker portal aims to facilitate the identification of scientific articles describing methods and other content with a clear connection to the 3Rs principle. The portal is open to everyone and has great potential to increase the use of methods with a 3Rs focus and as a tool in the 3Rs work in various research-related organizations.

NWO project – Accelerating the transition to animal-free NGRA: a transformative governance approach
Partnership with University of Utrecht, Radboud University and NWO. The project focuses on Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA), and on the transitions to animal-free safety assessment for chemicals and pharmaceuticals in the EU, the Netherlands, and the USA. Read more on this programme here.
